A root canal becomes necessary when decay or injury reaches the pulp — the soft tissue inside your tooth that contains nerves and blood vessels. A tooth with a long-standing abscess, pus discharge or severe infection needs a staged approach: the canals are cleaned and medicated in the first visit, the medication works for five to seven days, and the canals are sealed at the second visit once the infection has settled. Sealing an actively infected canal too early is a common cause of failed root canals elsewhere — we don't take that shortcut. Your X-ray tells us which category your tooth falls into, and we tell you before starting, along with the cost of each stage.
Either way, the tooth usually needs a crown (cap) within a few weeks of the RCT. A root-canal-treated tooth is more brittle than a live tooth, and molars especially can crack under chewing force without crown protection. Budget for the crown as part of the treatment, not as an optional extra — a cracked RCT tooth often can't be saved a second time.
Teeth rarely fail without warning. Run through this list honestly: Does hot tea or cold water cause pain that lingers for more than a few seconds after you swallow? Does the tooth throb at night when you lie down? Does chewing on that side make you flinch? Has the tooth darkened compared to its neighbours? Is there a pimple-like swelling on the gum near it that comes and goes?
Two or more yes answers usually mean the pulp is inflamed or dying, and a filling alone will no longer fix it. Stick to soft foods for the first day and chew from the other side until the permanent filling or crown is placed. Avoid very hard or sticky foods on the treated tooth in the first week.
A properly done RCT has a very high success rate, but failures happen — usually from a missed canal, a leaking old filling, or a cracked tooth. For back teeth (molars and premolars), yes — a crown is strongly recommended.
